I really prefer the layout on the portfolio 3 or 4 column pages but I'd rather they open in light box like the gallery ones. Is this possible? Unfortunately there are no options for the lightbox mode for portfolio element and portfolio layout for the gallery. Both would require additional customization of the theme code. Anyway, for the gallery, there might also be some plugins out there that could give the similar layout. Please try google with keywords like "masonry wordpress gallery plugin".
