Hi - I would like the potfolio to automatically scroll to the next item in the portfolio. Right now it stops on each "item" and you must click on the next item in "related links"
Unfortunately there is no feature for that out of the box. You would need to manually customize it by adding the next/prev code into the "/uxb_templates/single-portfolio.php" file.
I am sorry but the customization would be beyond my general support which only covers the issues from the default code package. In case you are not familiar with coding, I would suggest to find a freelancer to help you on the theme customization. You can find many great ones on http://studio.envato.com/
For your latter question, yes, I would recommend to use child theme when doing the customization.
