1. You need to upload the featured image for the portfolio items so it displays in the area. For more information about how to create your portfolio, I would suggest checking out the theme documentation (included in the package).
2. Did you mean the category menu on the left? If so, please go to "Appearance > Customize > Portfolio Options" then scroll down and disable the "Show Category Menu?" option.
